Craig Brewer’s successful follow up to Hustle and Flow (and incidentally, Sam Jackson’s follow up to Snakes on a Plane), Black Snake Moan is best described using the words of a reviewer on IMDB.com: “[To those that] know little about Mid-South culture a lot of what goes on may strike some as cartoonish.” I nominate that comment for Understatement of the Decade, though it’s true I know little about Mid-South culture except for what Lucero tells me. A few weeks ago, I derided a performance of Jackson’s, but he was amazing (as was Christina Ricci) in this and I think the bigger issue is his choice of roles.
