Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Chapter 10
Ten. That’s a nice round number.
Chapter 10: Kreacher’s Tale
The problem, if you’re an author, with taking a couple of years between books is that your readers, if they’re obsessed, are going to take that time to do some pretty close reading. No one, I trust, is surprised that the locket mentioned in book 5 turns out to be the Horcrux, or that R.A.B. is Regulus Black.
The details, however, are quite something. It was Kreacher helped Voldemort hide the Horcrux in the first place, and it was Kreacher who helped Regulus steal it. It’s a nice twist that Regulus wasn’t killed by the Death Eaters as we’d been told, but that he died stealing the locket.
Kreacher’s story is really tragic. I think even Harry and Ron have finally come around to Hermione’s view of house-elves. Poor little guy. I expect he’ll be quite useful.
The letter from Lily that Harry found in Sirius’s room is really sweet, but I’m irritated by Harry’s obsession with Dumbledore’s past. In fact, we’re seeing far too many shades of book 5 Harry (that is, annoying Harry). Yes, Harry’s had irritating obsessions before, and yes, they were proved correct in book 6, but that doesn’t make them any less irritating. Focus, Harry, focus!
(Rachel points out that someone else might well be obsessing over Dumbledore’s past, given that the second page of that letter may well have been stolen. Does this all tie back to Grindelwald?)
No spoilers for later chapters in the comments! What would poor Kreacher’s mistress think?

The “Dumbledore’s past” thing is more than just an annoying diversion, I’m sure of it. Besides, I’ve always wanted to know more about Dumbledore’s history anyway, so I’m not complaining.
Kreacher’s transformation was a tad on the abrupt side…nonetheless, I hope it turns out to be genuine.
