Chapter 28: The Missing Mirror
The mystery of the mirror and of Dobby’s summons: solved! Aberforth to the rescue! Mundungus’s thefts prove to work out for the best. The fact that Aberforth’s been keeping an eye on Harry rather puts the lie to his gruff defeatist attitude.
The whole sordid story of Dumbledore’s youth is finally told, too: Ariana’s tragedy claimed her father, her mother, and finally her own life. It does sound as though Ariana’s death and Grindelwald’s true nature revealed were what turned Albus from a selfish and arrogant youth to the man we knew.
And, Neville! Rather the worse for wear, but still! I’m a little confused as to how the portrait/tunnel thing works. Is it a real tunnel behind a fake painting? How can Neville come through the same thing that a painting can? My first guess was that it’s not a painting at all, and that Ariana is a ghost, not a portrait. We’ll see.

I do sort of wonder what the Order of the Phoenix — at least the original grown ups — is doing right now. Anything effective? Or is it all down to the kids (Ron, Harry, and Hermione hunting Horcruxes, Fred, George, and Lee running their underground radio show, and Neville, Ginny, et. al. running the Hogwarts resistance)? I mean, it’s hard to imagine what Lupin and Tonks and whatever possible remaining members of the order there might be could be up to.
Yay, Neville! I just had to say that. The way he appeared in this chapter made me so happy.
