Andrew Sullivan: Arbiter of True Feminism!
I don’t know what prompted Lewis to back Clinton; he marched between Obama and Clinton in Selma, but worshipped with Obama afterwards as you can see above. But I very much doubt that Bill did not have a word with him. Again: the way in which Hillary uses her marriage to advance her own power is striking. No real feminist would do this; only someone who postures as a feminist while using her husband as a tool.
I’m not sure this even makes sense. Using her husband’s connections to her advantage is somehow un-feminist? If Sullivan’s new husband (congratulations, by the way) was a former President of the United States, wouldn’t he be an idiot not to use those connections, especially if he wanted the same job? Is Sullivan opposed to networking?
There’s also something weird and patronizing in the fact that Sullivan sees something sinister in a prominent African-American’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton. (”A rising black politician in the Democratic party is a threat to them and their power over blacks.”) Yes, obviously, the only possible reason a black man wouldn’t endorse another black man is because of the eeeeevil Clintons.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not voting for Hillary, but this is nuts.
(And a shame, too, because the previous post on Sullivan’s blog is good.)

How come you’re not voting for Clinton? I haven’t really decided who I’d vote for yet, but I haven’t decided who I WON’T vote for, though.
She’s far too conservative for me. Some time before the primary I may gather the energy to write a post evaluating each of the Democratic candidates on the helpful and fascinating Matt-scale. I’m sure everyone cares.
I guess primaries are for hearts, but would you vote for someone you knew wouldn’t be able to win, or worse, wouldn’t be able to win the general? I’m not talking about the inevitably of Clinton so much as the lack of ability for Kucinich…
I think, more or less, any of the front-runner Democrats can win in the general.
Also, it’s more than a little insulting that he does not even give the slightest credence to the notion that maybe the guy backed Hillary because he thinks she would be a good president.
