Sending a Text Message from Gmail?

Wouldn't it be great if you could send a text message out of Gmail simply by entering a 10 digit phone number into the "To:" field of an email? Gmail would determine the carrier and send the message to your recipient. There ought to at least be a Greasemonkey script that uses one of the free online text messaging services for this task...

Works quite well as-is. If you know the carrier you just send it to the phone. For example to msg a verizon customer you would do 1234567890@vtext.com and to send a picture message you would use vzwpix.com as the address.
