Well, hell, we all make mistakes. And we all love a good list. My favorite is #7.

1. Failure to recognize or take seriously the scarcity of resources.
2. Mistaking strategic goals for strategy.
3. Failure to recognize or state the strategic problem.
4. Choosing poor or unattainable strategic goals.
5. Not defining the strategic challenge competitively.
6. Making false presumptions about one's own competence or the likely causal linkages between one's strategy and one's goals.
7. Insufficient focus on strategy due to such things as trying to satisfy too many different stakeholders or bureaucratic processes.
8. Inaccurately determining one's areas of comparative advantage relative to the opposition.
9. Failure to realize that few individuals possess the cognitive skills and mindset to be competent strategists.
10. Failure to understand the adversary.

While I noted it to Dave, I should have mentioned it here, as well. This list should have 11 points, the last being Vizzini's rule of never starting a land war in Asia. That one's so obvious.

Since leaving the Red Sox, John Smoltz has pitched effectively in 3 games. Today, ironically, he had trouble overcoming a Julio Lugo error in a loss, but at least he didn't get battered like when he was in Boston. Also pitching well since leaving, Brad Penny. As Bob Lobel would say, "Why can't we get guys like that?" Indirectly related, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who remembers Bob Lobel suing the "Get Fuzzy" comic for implying he was drunk on the air.

Since the Moneyball script was leaked this summer, some folks took it upon themselves to shoot a scene, just to see how it would come out. Execution isn't flawless, but it is a cool visualization of what the movie will/would be like. I imagine tighter cuts and dialogue delivered a little snappier, but we can work with this.

And then I fell completely into the rabbit hole of determining 1984's status of one of the more culturally relevant years ever. On the stage, David Mamet won a Pulitzer for Glengarry Glen Ross, and Jeremy Irons, Tom Stoppard, and Glen Close all won Tony Awards. Doug Flutie won the Heisman, Desmond Tutu won a Nobel Peace Prize, and Michael Jordan, Charles Barkely, and John Stockton were drafted.
