Matt, thanks for pointing me toward this wrenching, awe-inspiring piece of writing. I'm so sorry for the loss to all the people who loved Andrea--and, of course, for what Andrea never had the chance to do, experience, and write about.

Wow, that is a really interesting link. I guess I'm actually pretty pleased with most of that data on Rhode Island. I had no idea so many of our schools were meeting NCLB standards -- I had only heard that our state's schools were crap. Actually, I suppose both things could be true, which says something about the NCLB standards...

Matt,

I don't think we've met, but I'm part of the band Pesky J. Nixon, we routinely played with Andrea, more pertinent to this outside of music I was a good friend of Andrea's. Thank you for the post. The writing group meant so much to Andrea, and I"m not speaking with anymore authority than seeing her get excited days before you all met.

Tom, I don't yet know what PACE is going to do, but the SAMFund is putting together an Andrea Coller Memorial Grant. The SAMFund is a foundation that raises money to help young adult cancer survivors as they move back into the world post treatment. If you want to learn more about the organization it is online at http://www.thesamfund.org

Played a Pace a few times with Greg Alexander, Eric and so many others that Andrea brought together to share our individual talents. She will be missed.

Maybe PACE could established some sort of permanence to Andrea for all her hard work. Maybe a marker on the side walk , a bench to sit outside anything like that would be nice.

I hope the open mike continues, It is hard for me to think that she would not have wanted to see it go on.

You think that's crazy, try this one from the comment thread at Charlie's site:

I don't pretend to be knowledgeable enough about the science to state categorically one way or another that global warming does or does not exist. I do observe, however, that our planet does seem to have its own thermostat, a component of which is the system of volcanos around the world. Whenever one or another volcano blows its top, it sends however many cubic tons of ash into the atmosphere, which blocks sunlight. That cools the planet, right? They say that the melting of the polar ice cap increases the water level (and water is another cooling mechanism) although that seems to me to be just exchanging one mass - ice - for another mass - water. One would think these mechanisms would counteract any planetary warming. We just have to remember that geologic time is much different from our calendar time. How do we know how long a cooling/warming cycle takes?

Volcanoes, by some mechanism, erupt to keep temperatures a nice and pleasant 74 F and even if ice melts, it still turns into water which will cool things down. You have to be stupid to the nth power to think up some of the things these people think up.

I thought this movie was ok. It was funny, but not as "OMG, you will love this movie"-funny that some people seemed to think. No exaggeration, Blades of Glory was 100 times more hilarious.

Heh, thanks for allowing me the opportunity to expound, perhaps more clearly in the comments without having to stick to my 3 sentence mantra. Basically, about the scene mentioned above seemed indicative of the entire series, and then the scene's climax happened driving home the point that the CLIMAX was the real indicative moment.
I saw that Simon interview also, but couldn't really decide if that was a defense he came up with after the fact or an actual plan going into the season. Either way, I do think it works, though should have been driven home with a few more examples like the Prop Joe instance...

I get backed up on reviews and then back date them to when I actually watched a movie or finished a series...

Suck it Cheese.

I liked a comment from David Simon about how the real story of the media subplot is that they *never* really know what is going on in their city -- not with Prop Joe's death, not with the politics, not with the homeless murders, not with the police. They miss the real story at almost every turn.

(I just saw this items today, weeks later. Something is up with your RSS feed perhaps?)
