List of Facebook Usernames I Wish I Had Gotten…

...And Some I'm Glad I Didn't.

Last night, Facebook allowed users to grab user names, vanity URLs for the masses! Here's a list of names grabbed last night that would have been fun to have, and some that wouldn't be. All mixed together. There's the dorky, the profane, the regrettable. And yet, it's surprising the number of awesome vanity URLs leftover. Makes me think there just aren't THAT many people that care THAT much about the internet. If you haven't grabbed a name for yourself yet, go get one.

Props to this thread on Reddit for some of these. If you've got anymore, send them in or post in comments, and I'll add them.

Notes:
-iusetwitter, irony, and goddamn go to the Facebook Homepage. Maybe they're taken, and the profiles marked private.
-Nice of Facebook to reserve most, if not all, of the common first name only user names. A perk for employees?
-Here are some more winners: Mashable's list of 15 Vanity URLs.
-And here's a list that trumps mine. I should have searched for lists harder before I started exploring Facebook!

208 Facebook Status Messages in 24 Hours

Another big event calls for another look at the Facebook Status Stream or FaStStream (get it? get it?). This one's even in chronological order as opposed to the 273 Facebook Status from Election Day.

You can see the waves again, from mood to mood, more subtle this time. From eagerness the night before, to some folks waiting in line on the Mall, to when CNN/Facebook started up (those status messages are tagged), to when Obama was speaking and peeps were calling out their favorite quotations, to Rev Lowry calling for an 'Amen', to people getting ready to go out to Inaugural Balls.

One surprising absence is commentary on Chief Justice Roberts' flubbing the oath (it's been confirmed that the 20th Amendment makes the Oath a formality, so Obama IS officially the President). And it's hard to tell that anyone was watching the parade (even the viewing stand was empty by the time it started). CNN was making references to the ceremonies running late all day and I hope, hope, HOPE, they don't turn this into a 'theme' of the Administration. We'll see. I watched the ceremony in a conference room at work on ABC via Slingbox. There were about 30-40 co-workers watching as well. Those are my memories from the day, what did you catch?

I'm exhausted and the Obamas still have 4 more balls to get to as of 11:46PM on 1/20. Not sure how they're still going.

I'm going to lay it out right now. Facebook/Twitter needs to allow for exporting of these streams, or someone's going to have to build the tool, because I don't have the time to format these bitches every time we come together as a nation to celebrate the election of a transcendent figure. Got it?

Without further adieu, below are 208 Facebook Status Messages from my friends in 24 hours including the Inauguration.

BK is celebrating the final night of the worst 8 years our country has seen -- at least in my lifetime. on Monday
JA has acquired his inauguration tickets. We're in the back in the silver zone. Can't wait till tomorrow! on Monday
EL is so excited for tomorrow i can hardly focus on anything! holy schmoley! we will finally have an inspiring leader! on Monday

More messages after the jump.

Freaking Out About Freaking Out About The Snow Has Jumped The Shark

I'm calling it right now.
To: All you hardy New Englanders making noise about other New Englanders making noise about the snowstorm.

Look, people freak out about the weather. They freak out about the snow. They freak out about the cold. They freak out about the hot. They freak out about the rain. They freak out about the lack of rain. It's not just weather either. Any event that is happening to a large group of people is going to cause some percent of that population to freak out. And you know what? Another percent of the population is going to stand on the side of the that group and they're going to ridicule them for freaking out.

This is no loner acceptable behavior. It's over. Right now. This has to end. It's possible you didn't know how many of your acquaintances freaked out about weather and such before Facebook Status Updates and Twitter, but you've seen television news, right? Who do you think the reporter on the side of the road in the parka and mittens was talking to? Who do you think was watching all that stock footage of plows and sanders rolling out of the DPW yard? This is how people are. People like getting worked up about things and getting fired up about them getting fired up isn't going to make them not be fired up next time. Believe it. And you better know I'm serious if I'm using a euphemism that involves sharks. I hate sharks.

Comprehensive Election Reactions Round Up – A Reference

After the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, I didn’t quite know what to do to help myself take it all in. I found a message board called ‘Win it For’ that was started at some point before the World Series and was filled with stories from people who wanted the Red Sox to win the World Series for someone or other. I spent about 5 hours, reading it straight through, the morning after the World Series and it was the best way I could have celebrated the Red Sox winning.

On November 4, when Barack Obama was announced the winner of the 2008 Presidential Election I was searching for a similar sort of catharsis. Not so much because of Obama winning (which was nice) but because the election had been building as an event for almost 3 years – from the speculation of who would run, to the announcements, to the campaigns, to the primaries, to the general, and finally, November 4th came and went. I thought maybe I’ll collect a few thoughts from friends, or collect all the Facebook status messages, or collect a few links that helped tell the story. As I thought about it, I decided I wouldn’t be able to do what I wanted without going overboard. And I won’t lie, despite my attempts at making this document impartial, there’s no way it could have been. And though I’ve tried to make its focus 11/4, Election Day, there were certain events from the campaign that creeped in.

I wanted to create something to look at a couple years from now to remember the election and hopefully present a good representation of what both sides of America were feeling on that day as evidenced by the response in the press and on the blogs. I didn’t capture everything, though I’ve certainly tried. I want to consume all of this information, have it put on a microchip in my brain. Until that’s possible, I just read a lot. I don’t know how many of these links will work in a year or 5 years, (when this doc might be helpful to show younger people who may not have ever remembered having a president who isn’t black), but here’s what I’ve got. At the bottom is a list of all the sites I used and the domains that helped.
